iFixit: Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3 tablet as difficult to repair as predecessors

On the basis of a recent teardown of Microsoft's new Surface Pro 3 tablet, gadget-repair site iFixit has revealed that though the new Surface tablet is lighter as well as sleeker than its predecessors, it is almost as hard to repair as the previous-generation Surface tablets.

For ease of repair, or "repairability" as iFixit calls it, the new Surface Pro 3 tablet - which hit the markets last week - has received the lowest possible marks from iFixit. On a scale on 1 to 10, iFixit has given the Surface Pro 3 tablet as repairability score of 1; the same score which iFixit previously gave to the Surface Pro and Surface Pro 2 models.

According to the Surface Pro 3 repairability-related details shared by iFixit, the new Microsoft tablet has done away with the more than 90 screws in the Surface Pro 2; and has, in place, used "some seriously hideous adhesive" to hold together different components, including the display and battery.

As per iFixit, the hideous adhesive used by Microsoft for holding the Surface Pro 3 tablet's components in place has made the repairs of the tablet quite difficult.

In addition, iFixit also revealed that the thin display assembly of the Surface Pro 3 is made up of a fused glass panel and LCD, which is "extremely difficult" to remove and replace. To assert its point, iFixit said: "One slip-up, and you'll be out a screen."
