Humpback whale rescued off Boston

The 30-foot humpback whale that had caught in fishing gear off the coast of Boston last Thursday was finally disentangled and freed on Sunday, authorities confirmed.

The young whale was freed by the Marine Animal Entanglement Response (MAER) team from the Center for Coastal Studies (CCS) in Provincetown. It took several hours for the team members to cut the fishing gear to set huge marine creature free.

A strong rope was wrapped around the whale’s tale and it was linked to fishing gear on the sea floor. It essentially anchored the creature for more than half a week.

The whale was first spotted and reported by a commercial fisherman on Thursday. But, rough sea conditions didn’t allow the MAER team to respond until Sunday.

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) and the Massachusetts Environmental Police (MEP) provided assistance in the successful rescue effort.

Rescuers followed the whale for around a couple of hours as it slowly moved into the deeper sea. That say the whale is doing well but it will take some time for it to fully heal.
