Google, Facebook Participate in Worldwide Test of IPv6

IPv6

For those of us who may not be particularly tech savvy, it may come as a surprise to learn that the internet as we know it is simply running out of space.

This reality has prompted a number of major websites, such as Google, Facebook, and Yahoo, as well hundreds of other companies to participate in the first worldwide test of IPV6, also known as Internet Protocol Version 6, on June 8th.

What many of us may not know, is that the current worldwide internet standard, IPv4, also known as Internet Protocol Version 4, will soon run out of available Internet Protocol addresses, the numbers that are used to label every packet of data on the internet. This shortage will make the eventual shift to a new standard, IPv6, necessary within the near future.

In order to identify any potential problems that could arise during the inevitable shift, 400 organizations, under the direction of the Internet Society, will enable their servers and websites to run on the new system for a 24-hour “test run”.

"The goal of the Test Flight Day is to motivate organizations across the industry – internet service providers, hardware makers, operating system vendors and web companies – to prepare their services for IPv6 to ensure a successful transition as IPv4 addresses run out", the Internet Society said.
