According to a new paper published by researchers from the Google Brain team, an experimental project undertaken by the team has unfolded a human-independent artificial intelligence (AI) that is capable of protecting messages from intrusive eyes.

The paper, titled ‘Learning to protect communications with adversarial neural cryptography,’ essentially reports the discovery of the AI which, when properly tasked, has the capability to create peculiarly human-independent cryptographic schemes that allow it to encrypt much better than decrypt.

The encryption task performed by human-independent AI is too complicated for humans to crack. As such, the AI can potentially enable computers to encrypt human messages and data on their own, with humans having no access to it.

For the mentioned AI project, Google researchers Martín Abadi and David G. Andersen created three, neural test subjects, simply called Alice, Bob and Eve. The task to be performed by the three subjects involved the passing of notes to one another; with the notes having been encrypted to a point where humans could not gain access. Alice had to send a message which could be deciphered only by Bob, while Eve was tasked with decoding the message.

After several ‘trial and error’ efforts, Alice and Bob could communicate clearly using a shared key; while Eve somewhat managed to decrypt the systems early on, but eventually started failing at it as Alice and Bob became proficient.
