Google and Five Asian firms to jointly invest $300mn in trans-Pacific fiber-opti

According to an announcement made on Monday, a joint investment of $300 million will be made by Internet search giant Google and five Asian telecom companies in a new trans-Pacific fiber-optic cable system.

The proposed underwater cable system, called FASTER, will connect the west coast of the US to the cities of Chikura and Shima in Japan. The cable - the construction of which will begin immediately - is projected to become operational by mid-2016.

The FASTER fiber-optic cable system will speed up Internet connections and services on the Pacific Rim; thanks to its capacity of initially providing 60 terabytes per second (60 Tb/s) in bandwidth, which will be sufficient for 60,000 gigabit connections operating at their limits.

The deployment of the FASTER cable system will be overseen by NEC, the leading vendor of submarine cable systems. The five Asian firms which will collectively invest with Google for the cable system include China Mobile International, China Telecom Global, KDDI, Global Transit, and SingTel.

Noting that "the FASTER cable system has the largest design capacity ever built on the Trans-Pacific route, which is one of the longest routes in the world," Woohyong Choi - Chairman of the executive committee of the cable project - said in a Monday statement: "The agreement announced today will benefit all users of the global Internet."
