Gold Fields Plans to Cut 500 Jobs

Gold Fields in holding talks with workers union to reach a deal on 500 job cuts to reduce the operational expenses. The company plans to cut nearly 13 percent workforce at the South Deep mine.

Frans Baleni, general secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers informed that the union has rejected any job cuts offer from the management. CEO Nick Holland said that the job cuts are needed to improve the efficiency at the mine.

Gold Fields hired 15 experts from Australia to improve the efficiency at the mine and train workers to work under better work plan.

CEO Nick Holland said, ““It is at a sensitive stage. We are in a dialogue with the unions. So I can’t tell you when it will be or what the outcome will be.”

At South Deep mine, Gold Fields has nearly 4,000 permanent workers and nearly 1,800 contractors. South Deep is the second largest gold mine in the World.
