FLIR System, Movidius team up to create world’s most intelligent thermal imaging

In a Monday announcement, leading US thermal imaging technology firm FLIR Systems and Irish tech company Movidius have revealed that they have teamed up to create the most intelligent thermal imaging solution in the world.

The partnership announced by FLIR Systems and Movidius will chiefly focus on thermal imaging products powered by artificial intelligence (AI). The companies will create a single thermal imaging core by amalgamating FLIR Systems latest thermal imaging camera core - FLIR Boson - with the Movidius Myriad 2 Vision Processing Unit.

With FLIR Systems' thermal imaging camera core already boasting the capability to see thermal images, the addition of the Movidius Myriad 2 will give it some context. As such, the key idea behind the FLIR-Movidius partnership is 'to give cameras the ability to understand what they are looking at.'

According to Movidius CEO Remi El-Ouazzane, the partnership will bring about a noteworthy improvement in FLIR's technology across diverse uses in the security and aviation sectors, along with personal uses.

About the advantages of FLIR Systems' tie-up with Movidius, Andy Teich -- President and CEO of FLIR Systems -- said in a statement: "With system-on-a-chip interfaces and machine intelligence capability available through Movidius, we enable Flir cores to make greater sense of the rich information being captured by our sensors."
