Field Day Events to be Held Across US and Canada

After Hurricane Sandy occurred in New Jersey in 2012, Richard Kenneday provided help to affected people so that they can talk to their family members in Florida from his own home.

Kennedy, 64, established a way to communicate with officials in New Jersey from his home in Zephyrhills when phone calls, text messages and emails stopped working. He actually used an amateur radio to communicate. The radio is also known as ham radio and it used voice or Morse code for communication.

During annual Field Day events this weekend, Kennedy and the Lakeland Amateur Radio Club will educate people about how vital communication links are provided by amateur radio. The events will be held across the United States and Canada. Winter Haven and Lake Wales will also host the events.

After Hurricane Sandy, people contacted Kennedy to let them get in touch with their family members in the Tampa area and tell them their loved ones were safe.

"They were very, very appreciative and relieved. Many of them were trying to call in to the area for hours on end, and they were only seeing gloom and doom on the news networks", Kennedy said.

Licensed radio amateurs celebrate the Field Day by gathering in groups and constructing emergency stations. They attempt contacting as many other stations as possible, said the American Radio Relay League website.

The Lakeland Amateur Radio Club's members will be making efforts to build their station at Hunt Fountain Park on Duff Road in Lakeland. They will operate it from 2 pm today until 2 pm Sunday.

Being the president of the club, Kennedy has invited people to come at the event and learn about amateur radio and the process to get their own radio license.
