Ferry captain’s medical emergency disrupts Tacoma-Vashon Island service

The weekend ferry service between Tacoma and Vashon Island was suspended after the ferry captain had a medical emergency, Washington State Ferries spokesperson Ian Sterling confirmed.

The captain, whose name wasn’t immediately released, lost consciousness and collapsed, hitting the boat’s control panel. The affected control panel caused the boat to lurch forward, resulting in insignificant damages to the dock.

Spokesperson Sterling added that crew members were able to swiftly control the boat. They also used a defibrillator on the collapsed captain before he was transported to a nearby hospital.

Doctors said the captain, who has been with the ferry service for last several years, was expected to survive. However, he is not expected to return to work for the many days to come.

The Point Defiance-Tahlequah ferry line will not resume until the damaged dock gets repaired. The captain’s absence may cause repeated delays and cancellations of ferry services throughout the system.
