Facebook Users Have More Friends On and Offline than Non-Facebook Users, Claims

A recent study has found that Facebook users have closer ties to offline friends than people who don’t have a Facebook account. A survey, conducted by Pew Research Center in Washington DC, questioned 2,225 Americans.

A Facebook user has on an average 229 friends, which turn out to be 48% of their ‘real’ offline friends. Researchers are suggesting that making online relationships will actually improve your social life offline as well.

The study also found that Facebook users are more trusting than non-Facebook users. They were 43% more likely to say “most people can be trusted”. Facebook users are three times more likely to be trusting than those who don’t use the internet.

It is not completely clear why Facebook users are more trusting. Keith Hampton, the main author of the study and a communications professor at the University of Pennsylvania, has come up with one possible explanation: people are more willing to trust people because they interact with a larger number of people.

The researchers also identified the most common social group that is added on Facebook. The average Facebook user has 56 friends on their profile from high school. That is the most for any other social group which includes family, current school mates and co-workers.
