Facebook: Tuesday outage was caused by technical change, not cyberattack

According to a recent USA TODAY report, social networking giant Facebook has said in a statement released on Tuesday that the recent disruption of its service was caused by a technical change, and not a cyberattack.

The service disruption which Facebook said was self-inflicted resulted in the outage of the social network for nearly one hour on Tuesday. During the outage, the Facebook sites were inaccessible by users across the world.

Due to the outage, users of PCs and Facebook's mobile app in the US, the UK, Australia and Asia reported loss of access to the social network. During the hour-long disruption of the Facebook service, the Facebook-owned Instagram photo-sharing site could also not be accessed.

About the Tuesday outage, which incidentally came one day ahead of Facebook's scheduled quarterly earnings report, Facebook said in a statement that the service disruption had occurred because of a change introduced by Facebook that affected its "configurations systems."

Asserting that the Tuesday outage was "not the result of a third party attack," Facebook said in its statement: "This loss of service may be Facebook's biggest outage since September 24, 2010, when it was down for about 2.5 hours."
