Facebook reportedly working on dedicated video chat device
Social-networking giant Facebook is reportedly working on a new device that will be dedicated to increasingly popular video chat.
Citing anonymous sources, Bloomberg reported that the dedicated video chat hardware will be the inaugural major product from the company’s Building 8 product development lab.
The device will reportedly include a notebook-sized screen, and it will try to make geographically separated video participants feel like they are together in the same space.
Building 8’s chief Regina Dugan didn’t confirm the report but at the most recent F8 conference, he stressed that the aim of the lab was to develop and ship new-fangled consumer products that are social first.
At the time, he added, “I’m optimistic that technology can help, that new hardware platforms can chip away at false choices. If we fail it’s gonna suck.”
Led by former Google executive Regina Dugan, Facebook’s Building 8 is reportedly also working on a separate smart speaker product, resembling Google Home and Amazon’s Echo. It would run on a voice assistant developed by the world’s largest social network provider.
