Facebook releases its first workforce diversity report

Social network Facebook has recently released its first-ever workforce diversity report, revealing that the company is largely dominated by white men --- a trend which is seen across most of the tech firms in the US Silicon Valley.

According to the figures shared by Facebook in its workforce diversity report, male employees comprise 70 percent of the Facebook workforce; with white employees comprising 57 percent of the workforce, and Asians accounting for 34 percent.

The report further revealed that Hispanics represent barely 4 percent of the Facebook employees; while African Americans account for only 2 percent of the company's workforce.

So far as the senior-level executives are concerned, an overwhelming majority of 74 percent of these executives are white; with Hispanics and black employees accounting for only 4 percent and 1 percent respectively.

With the Facebook workforce clearly not reflecting the demographics of the social network's users around the world, it is evident from the lopsided workforce-diversity numbers released by Facebook will further intensify the much-heated debate over the lack of diversity in the tech industry.

Noting that Facebook's workforce diversity figures show that the company has "more work to do -- a lot more," Maxine Williams - Facebook's global head of diversity - said in a recent post: "Since our strategic diversity team launched last year, we're already seeing improved new hire figures and lower attrition rates for underrepresented groups."
