Facebook is reducing human involvement in displaying Trending Topics

In a blog post released on Friday, social network Facebook said that it is bringing about a change in its Trending Topics section, reducing the involvement of humans in how the trending news section is displayed.

According to the details shared by Facebook, the Trending Topics section is being retooled by the company to remove human-written descriptions, and increase dependence on computers. The company claims that the retooling of the section will augment its scalability and personalization.

As a result of the retooling of the Trending Topics section by Facebook, the section will no longer show a headline and a summary; instead, it will show an algorithmically selected trending topic, along with the number of people discussing that topic.

Facebook’s move to reduce human involvement in how Trending Topics are displayed underscores a change made by the company in response to an earlier-this-year report by tech news site Gizmodo which revealed – on the basis of information shared anonymously by editors working with the social network – that Facebook suppressed conservative Trends.

About the changed Trending Topics section, Facebook said: "In this new version of Trending we no longer need to draft topic descriptions or summaries, and as a result we are shifting to a team with an emphasis on operations and technical skillsets."
