Facebook launches Internet.org app in India

Facebook has launched its Internet.org app in India this week, giving free access to basic Internet services to millions of people in the country. The app has been launched in India by Facebook in collaboration with local cellular carrier Reliance Communications.

The Internet.org app launched by Facebook in India is now available in six states —Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Telangana. The app gives Reliance customers – even those without a data plan - in these six states ‘free’ access to more than three dozen Web services.

The main Web portals which can be accessed within the Internet.org app – other than Facebook and Facebook Messenger service - include Wikipedia; a few job listing websites; and select weather, sports, and news outlets.

According to the details shared by Facebook, Reliance customers in the mentioned Indian states can access the free Web services in the Internet.org Android app, as well as on the Web. The services can also be accessed from the start screen of the Opera Mini mobile Web browser, and in the Android app UC Browser. Most of the services will be available in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Gujarati, and Marathi.

About the launch of Internet.org app in India, Facebook said in a statement: "This is a big step forward in our efforts to connect everyone to the Internet, and to help people share their ideas and creativity with the entire world. We'll continue to improve the experience and roll it out to other parts of the world."
