Facebook could launch traditional TV-style shows in June
Social networking giant Facebook Inc. is reportedly making preparations for releasing a line-up of TV-style shows on its site as soon as in June this year.
Facebook has repeatedly said that video is one of the top priorities for the company going forward. Thus, news of release of TV-style shows is not surprising at all.
Citing anonymous sources, media outlets reported that the social-networking giant will mainly release two kinds of shows: longer, traditional television-style scripted shows and shorter shows that will be updated by the company on daily basis.
The reported decision of Facebook to make a foray into the content business is the latest in a trend of technology firms that are looking to control not only the platform but also the content streaming on the platform.
If Facebook really enters the field, it will have compete with a number of well-established players like Hulu, Netflix and Amazon, Verizon, Snapchat, as well as rival social-networking platform Twitter Inc.
