Experts say Paracetamol does notaddress back pain and osteoarthritis

According to a new study, paracetamol is not effective in alleviating lower back pain and osteoarthritis for patients.

The team of researchers in Australia have warned that the common over the counter medicine does nothing to alleviate the pain and may lead to abnormal liver function. The researchers are calling for an urgent review of guidelines that encourages use of these medicines.

The researchers from that the medicine does not does not relive one from spinal pain, which includes neck and lower back pain, and osteoarthritis that is one of the leading causes of disability.Clinical guidelines recommend paracetamol as the first drug for both conditions. However, the researchers found evidence that shows that this recommendation is weak and inconsistent and there are safety concerns with the recommended full dosage, which is up to 4000 mg/day.

The recent decision by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to continue to recommend paracetamol for osteoarthritis has been considered controversial.Lead author Gustavo Machado from The George Institute for Global Health at the University of Sydney conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the efficacy and safety of paracetamol for both back pain and osteoarthritis for hip or knee.
