Efforts by President Mahama to create awareness on Climate Change

President Mahama said during this year's rainy Independence Day that it is bizarre to have rainstorms like those that happened at this time of the year. The President has made several efforts to create awareness about climate change.

Mahama with the Former President H.E. John A. Kufuor serving as the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy on Climate Change can do a lot for Ghana to take the lead in battling climate change. Also, they can set actions for climate change as the agenda for the region.

'Raise your voice, not the sea level' was the theme of this year's World Environment Day on June 5. Concerns were raised to protect Small Island States that are home to more than 63 million people. These states are facing the highest risk of experiencing extreme weather events attributable to human-induced climate change.

Global warming is not only seen as a threat to the environment and economy but it also raises a security issue with the potential of triggering violence and escalating longstanding political and ethnic tensions. Enough evidence has been provided by scientific community that climate change is for real and many places in the world have witnessed natural disasters, food shortage and droughts.

Experts have also warned that women face higher risk of being troubled by climate change than men, especially in areas where there is less information and community resources. It is important to provide enough institutional protection or support to women at the risk to develop endurance for extreme weather events and adaptation to changing conditions in the long-term.
