Drugs Being Smuggled Through Mexico

Drugs Smuggled

The United Nations has claimed that the drugs which are traded in Western Africa are being smuggled through the streets of Mexico. The local players have already increased their control of the system to smuggle the drugs like cocaine in to market of the north.

From the recent years, it was found out that the amount of cocaine seized is dropping down. But the reason behind the drop can be the sophisticated system for smuggling drugs says Alexandre Schmidt, West African head of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

In a meeting in Senegal, he said, “It means there has been a repositioning of the drug routes and the drug traffickers have much more sophisticated means and they are using more routes."

In 2009, around $800 million of the drugs were passing through West Africa. They were equivalent to the large chunks of the economies of the some countries in the region. A few hundred Latin Americans still dominating the decision-making in the trade but the West Africans have increased their influential roles in the smuggling.

Schmidt, the Regional Head of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime has also claimed that the smuggling of drugs has reduced but he still thinks that the trade is increasing for about some $800m (£494m) a year.
