Doctors seeking approval for three-parent IVF babies

Doctors seeking approval for three-parent IVF babies

Doctors are seeking regulatory approvals for three-person IVF that can reportedly prevent various diseases that starve the body of energy and lead to muscle wasting, heart failure and brain damage.

The new technology involve three persons instead of two, and replaces the faulty power packs in the mother’s egg, which is formally called mitochondria, with health power packs from a donor woman.

In other words, a three-person baby will have most of its hereditary inheritance from its parents, but a tiny amount of genes will come from the donor woman.

While the controversial procedure has already been approved in Mexico, and a baby has been born using the innovative technique; the British regulators have yet to approve it. There have been calls for additional checks on it before it gets approval.

Prof Robin Lovell-Badge, a member of the team who reviewed the evidence, said, “We’re not going to learn much more now unless you try it out for real basically - it's at that stage. There's no reason why it shouldn't go ahead now, but do it cautiously on selected patients where the risk of having a badly affected child is very high.”

British regulators are concerned that the controversial technique can still lead to some defective mitochondria that could result into end of an embryo.

The new technique was detailed in the most recent edition of the journal Nature.
