Dish expresses concerns over proposed Comcast-TWC merger

In a filing with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)Wednesday, satellite-TV provider Dish Network has expressed concerns over Comcast's proposed acquisition of Time Warner Cable (TWC) for $45 billion.

In an evident attempt aimed at getting the Comcast-TWC merger blocked, Dish said in its FCC filing that the proposed merger will "present serious competitive concerns for the broadband and video marketplaces and therefore should be denied."

The FCC filing by Dish comes at a time when federal regulators are soliciting comments about the Comcast-TWC deal. In the filing, Dish's Deputy General Counsel Jeff Blum has expressed the apprehension thatgovernment mandated remedies will probably not be able to blunt the potential harms of the merger.

Highlighting that Comcast and TWC as a combined company will be, by far, the biggest cable provider in the US, Dish said that the merged Comcast-TWC company will apparently exercise its mammoth size for leveraging programming content in anti-competitive ways.

Asserting that the Comcast-TWC merger will have "at least three 'choke points' in the broadband pipe" to potentially harm rival vide services, Dish has elaborated that these three 'choke points' include: "the last mile 'public Internet' channel to the consumer; the interconnection point; and any managed or specialized service channels, which can act as high-speed lanes and squeeze the capacity of the public Internet portion of the pipe."
