Diabetes Drug Linked to Low Level of Thyroid Hormone

Commonly used diabetes drug Metformin has been associated with low level of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) among patients suffering from hypothyroidism. The study has been published in Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ).

Lower level of Thyroid-stimulating hormone can increase the risk of fractures and has been linked to higher risk of heart ailments. Metformin is widely prescribed for diabetes patients.

Lead researcher Dr. Laurent Azoulay with the department of oncology at McGill University in Montreal said, "The results of this longitudinal study confirmed that the use of metformin was associated with an increased risk of low TSH levels in patients with treated hypothyroidism."

The research team in Canada analyzed the records for 74,300 patients who were prescribed metformin and sulfonylurea. Out of these patients, 5,689 suffered from hypothyroidism.

Compared to normal patients of diabetes, those with hypothyroidism, had 119 incidents per 1000 of low level of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH).

The research team added that the finding should be checked further on a bigger group of patients. Metformin lowers the blood sugar levels. The drug reduces glucose production in the liver.
