Deadly Anthrax Disease Identified in Beef in Eastern Hungary

On Friday, the health authority ANTSZ announced about the detection of deadly anthrax disease in frozen beef in eastern Hungary. Five people are admitted in hospital and are under observation for suspected infection from the disease.

The disease was identified in the frozen beef after two cattle were illegally slaughtered in a farm in Tiszafured, a town that is around 160 km east of Budapest. Though five people are admitted to hospital, authorities concerned were of the view that anyone who has come in contact with the infected beef will be treated with antibiotics as a precaution.

Officials have asked people who think they might have come in contact with the beef to get their check-up done. Repeated suggestions are given as early treatment is most effective in treating the virus.

The meat was not frozen properly in Tiszafured. It was then transported to a company operating in restaurants and hotels. Since the time news of infection spread, the company's kitchen is closed, revealed the National Public Health and Medical Officer Service.

Officials said there is no immediate risk of the disease. Steps are being taken as all animals in the area that may get exposed to anthrax have been vaccinated.

Anthrax takes place by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis and is soil-borne. The bacteria infect herbivorous mammals that eat or inhale the spores while grazing. The diseased animals can then pass on the virus to humans who eat their meat.
