CWD posing big threat to deer

Deer in Alabama are at risk because of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) that isn’t spread from bacteria or virus but by a little minuscule varmint called a prion, the state’s Department of Conservation & Natural Resources (DCNR) cautioned.

Prions can be described as infectious, single proteins that affected infected animals’ brain by causing sponge like degeneration of brain cells. This microscopic varmint is can ruthlessly withstand long periods of time and a number of decontamination methods.

It was first identified in mule deer at a research facility in Colorado in 1967. Since then, it has been found in deer and elk populations at various sites across the nation. More than two dozen U.S. states and at least two Canadian provinces have reported the presence of CWD.

A team of biologists at the Norwegian Veterinary Institute has also diagnosed the potentially fatal disease in a reindeer from the Nordfjella population in Southern Norway.

Among other things, CWD can spread through use of deer urine and other gland based scents that hunters often use to get the animal into shooting range. However, the risk has prompted several states to prohibit the use of deer urine in certain areas.

Virginia is the most recent state to ban the use of deer urine by hunters. The also list includes Arizona, Alaska, Vermont as well as Canadian provinces like Ontario and Nova Scotia.
