Cuban doctor cured of Ebola, wants to return to Africa

A doctor from the island nation of Cuba, who contracted Ebola in Sierra Leone and was cured after experimental treatment in a Swiss hospital, wants to return to Africa to help more patients.

The doctors said that he wants to return to West Africa and continue treating patients there. Dr. Felix Baez, who is 43 years old, said at Havana's Jose Marti airport that he will be returning to Sierra Leone. It is now known if Cuban health officials will allow him to return to Africa

The Cuban authorities have received global appreciation for contributing to the fight against the outbreak of the disease in West Africa. The disease has killed more than 6,000 people. A total of about 200 doctors and nurses are on standby for an Ebola assignment in West Africa. These are additional compared to 256 who are working in nations like Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea.

Cuban Health Minister Roberto Morales and other government officials were present at the airport to greet Baez. The doctor spent 16 days being treated in isolation at a Swiss hospital. He is now united with his wife and eldest son.
