CSX Freight Train Carrying Crude Oil Derails Causing Oil Spill

The sky was filled with thick smoke and flames of fire soon after a railcar derailed Monday near the town of Mount Carbon in south-central West Virginia, said officials.

The CSX freight train, which met with an accident, was carrying crude oil. The incident took place around 1:30 pm in Fayette County, West Virginia, said officials.

According to Lawrence Messina, spokesman for the West Virginia Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety, one home was destroyed and one person got injured during the incident.

Messina giving details about the happening said that nearly 30 of the train’s more than 100 cars came off the tracks. He said the reason that would have caused the derailment of the railcars is still unclear.

It was told that the oil from the railcars spilled into the Kanawha River, a source of drinking water in Kanawha and Fayette counties. Officials said that oil spill from the railcars in the river may have contaminated the drinking water of surrounding communities.

Governor Earl Ray Tomblin even issued a state of emergency for both the counties on the Monday night. The Governor has also urged area residents to conserve water.

Police, on the other hand, also asked residents within half a mile to the accident site to evacuate the area until further notice.

Messina said, “We've had some severe winter weather conditions here with significant snowfall. We don't yet know whether that's a factor in this”.

The train with two locomotives and more than 100 railcars was carrying crude oil from North Dakota’s Bakken formation to a storage terminal in Yorktown, Virginia.

Nearly 14 tanks cars were reported to be burning after the derailment whereas some derailed railcars exploded, said officials.

In addition, CSX is working along with the Red Cross and other relief organizations to help the Mount Carbon residents.
