Class-action lawsuit against Facebook has gathered support from 60,000 users

Austrian law student Max Schrems revealed on Thursday that the class-action lawsuit which he has filed against social network Facebook, for alleged privacy violations, has gathered support from 60,000 users. Schrems also said that the lawsuit - which is pending at the European Court of Justice - has passed its first legal review.

The lawsuit - through which Schrems is seeking damages up to $16 million for Facebook users - accused Facebook for helping the US National Security Agency (NSA) in mining the personal details of the nearly 1.32 billion users of the social-networking site.

The list of plaintiffs for the class-action lawsuit against Facebook was closed by Schrems earlier this month after the campaign - launched on website fbclaim. com - was joined by 25,000 people, which is the requisite limit for filing a class action.

However, Schrems has now claimed that 35,000 more people registered online on the campaign site to join the class-action lawsuit.

Furthermore, stating that the lawsuit has got through its first legal review, Schrems said that a four-week period has been given by the Vienna Regional Court to Facebook Ireland - which runs Facebook's international activities - to respond to his allegations that the company had assisted the NSA in mining users' personal data.
