China rebuffs claims of govt ban on purchase of Apple devices

In response to a Wednesday-published Bloomberg News report which claimed that US tech giant Apple has been blacklisted in China due to national security concerns, China's Central Government Procurement Centre has asserted in a recent statement that Apple devices have not been banned from Chinese government procurement lists.

The statement by Chief's chief procurement center rebuffs the Bloomberg News report which said that as many as 10 Apple devices - including iPad and MacBook laptops - have been removed from a Chinese government list owing to security concerns. The list in question involves energy-saving devices.

According to the Central Government Procurement Centre website, as well as the Finance Ministry and Apple itself, the tech giant had never applied to the Chinese government to bring its devices on to the list in the first place.

Revealing that the energy-saving devices list is only one of the several government procurement lists in China, the procurement centre said that Apple devices can still be purchased by the Chinese government even if the devices do not feature on the energy-saving devices list.

Meanwhile, a Finance Ministry fax sent to Reuters late Thursday said: "Even though Apple has the certification for energy-saving products... it has never provided the necessary verification material and agreements according to the regulations."
