CARB engineers detect new defeat device on Audi cars

German newspaper BILD am Sonntag has revealed in a recent report that engineers at the California Air Resources Board (CARB) have detected a previously unreported defeat device software in an automatic transmission Audi.

According to the report, the new Audi cheater device – which CARB engineers detected four months back – has been implemented on “several hundred thousand” diesel and gas-powered Audi cars sold worldwide.

The affected cars come with an automatic transmission with an internal designation AL 551; and include the Audi A6, Audi A8, Audi Q5 and other models.

The report has revealed that the cheater device has been camouflaged as a “warm-up function,” to keep the transmission in low rev mode. The device causes the transmission to engage in a ‘low CO2’ program, keeping emissions misleadingly low, when the affected Audi models are off the “rolling road” used in official emission tests.

The report has also drawn attention to the fact that affected Audi models were equipped with the new cheater device until as late as May 2016; that is, nearly eight months after Volkswagen’s diesel-emissions scandal became public in September 2015.
