BMW plans to launch all-electric version of next-gen X3 and electric Mini models
In an announcement made on Friday, bigwig German luxury automaker BMW AG said that it plans to launch an all-electric version of its next-generation X3 compact sport utility vehicle (SUV), along with an electric Mini.
The announcement by BMW implies that the automaker apparently has efforts underway to significantly expand its electric vehicle portfolio, by making new vehicles available in the emerging electric luxury vehicle market.
So far as BMW’s previous offerings in the electric-vehicle market are concerned, the automaker tested out the Mini E in 2009, and rolled out the i3 electric car in 2013. Thereafter, it launched BMW i8, as well as the plug-in versions of the X5 and a 3-series. The plug-in hybrids which have been launched by BMW in recent years include the X5 xDrive40e, 225xe, 330e, and 740e models.
In detailing its plans to launch electric X3 and Mini vehicles, BMW said in its Friday announcement that the vehicles will likely hit the markets in 2019.
Meanwhile, with a Reuters report revealing that BMW’s plans to release electric X3 and Mini vehicles is a result of the pressure being faced by the company to launch new electric luxury vehicles, Harald Krueger – CEO of BMW – said that the electric X3 and Mini vehicles will be "competitive," both in terms of range and price.
