Blizzard reveals first new map – ‘Eichenwalde’ – for Overwatch

In an announcement made during the course of a livestream at the Gamescom event held in Cologne, Germany, on Tuesday, Blizzard said that it is releasing the first new map for the Overwatch competitive shooter since its launch.

The first new map which Blizzard has announced for Overwatch is a Medieval-themed map called ‘Eichenwalde.’ Set in the suburbs of Stuttgart, Germany, the ‘Eichenwalde’ map -- with a castle and a tiny old-world village -- is a hybrid Assault/Escort map.

Describing Eichenwalde as the birthplace of the robot Bastion, Blizzard said Eichenwalde occupies a "very vertical" portion of the map. Blizzard also added in the map’s fly-through video during the livestream that the map shows some of the destroyed Bastion robots that are littered all over the map.

In its official description of the newly-launched Eichenwalde map for Overwatch, Blizzard said that the site unfolded in the map marks “one of the most famous battles during the Omnic Crisis.”

Blizzard also elaborated in the map’s official description that it was at the Eichenwalde site that “the leader of the Crusaders, Balderich von Alder, and a handful of his best soldiers made a last stand against an advancing automaton army. Outnumbered and outgunned, they were ultimately slain during the resulting combat. However, thanks to their valiant efforts, the German military was able to push back the omnic offensive and win the fight.”
