Beijing Marathon runners wear masks to keep smog away

In spite of substantial infection covering Beijing on Sunday, a worldwide marathon proceeded, with face covers and wipes among the supplies utilized by contenders to fight the exhaust cloud.

The 34th Beijing International Marathon started at Tiananmen Square with a large number of the countless members wearing face covers. The 26.2-mile course finished at the Chinese capital's Olympic Park, on a day when structures over the city vanished into the light black tinged fog.

The men's and ladies' marathon victors were both from Ethiopia. Girmay Birhanu Gebru won the men's race in 2 hours, 10 minutes, 42 seconds, while Fatuma Sado Dergo won the ladies' in 2:30:3.

"Today the condition did have a little effect on my execution, yet not a real one," said China's Gong Lihua, who came in third in the ladies' race.
