Archaeologists discover 2,500-year-old ‘lost city’ in Greece

An international team of Archaeologists has announced the discovery of a mysterious ‘lost city’ in Greece, potentially opening gates to the region’s history.

Archaeologists from Greece, Britain and Sweden discovered the lost city at a village called Vlochós, which is situated nearly five hours north of Athens in the ancient Geek region of Thessaly. Remains belonged to the 2,500-year-old previously hidden city were found scattered across a hill close to the village.

The Vlochos Archaeological Project is a partnership between the Ephorate of Antiquities of Karditsa and the Swedish Institute in Athens. Researchers started exploring the Vlochós site earlier this year.

Robin Rönnlund, a doctoral student in classical archaeology at University of Gothenburg, said, “A colleague and I came across the site in connection with another project last year, and we realised the great potential right away.”

They found remains of walls, city gates and towers on the hill’s summit and slopes. However, hardly anything was found on the ground of the lost city. The discovery of a town square and a street grid indicated that it was quite a massive city. Oldest finds are estimated to be from around 500 B.C.

The researchers have plans to return to the ancient Vlochós site in 2017 for further study.
