Apple has reportedly acquired ‘social search engine’ startup Spotsetter; plans t

According to a TechCrunch report, Apple has acquired 'social search engine' startup Spotsetter which enables users to search for places and gives them recommendations for places where they may be interested to explore.

To offer its services as a social search engine, Spotsetter essentially adds social data - through Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, and Instagram, among others - and venue-review data to maps for recommending places to the users.

Despite the fact that Apple has not confirmed the acquisition of Spotsetter, the startup had revealed in a last-week blog post that the app will soon be shut down. The disclosure implied that in case Apple has actually acquired Spotsetter, the service is not likely to continue as a standalone product.

Apparently, the Spotsetter technology will be integrated by Apple into its native Maps app to make it more attractive. As such, though the Spotsetter service will imminently be shut down, the integration of its technology into Apple Maps will help Apple compete more effectively with Google's location services.

Meanwhile, hinting at Apple's acquisition of Spotsetter, the LinkedIn profiles of the startup's co-founders - Stephen Tse and Johnny Lee - have recently been updated to show that they are now Apple employees.
