Apple acquires machine learning and AI startup Turi

In a move first reported by Geekwire, tech giant Apple has acquired Turi Inc., a machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) startup based in Seattle. Apple has reportedly paid an amount of $200 million for the acquisition of Turi, which was originally named GraphLab in its open-source project days and was earlier called Dato.

The reported acquisition of Turi -- a startup which basically helps developers in creating AI solutions -- by Apple underscores an apparent effort by the tech giant to compete with Google, Amazon, and Facebook in the AI arena.

However, the Turi acquisition deal has not been officially confirmed by Apple. In response to the reports about the acquisition, Apple has released the characteristic statement which it provides when it makes acquisitions. The statement goes thus: "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans."

Since Apple has not yet confirmed the acquisition officially, it is not clear whether plans to make Turi's several developer tools available to the large community of Apple developers or whether objective behind the acquisition is to get hold of Turi's talent and intellectual property.

Meanwhile, so far as the Turi team - spearheaded by Carlos Guestrin, Amazon professor of machine learning at the University of Washington - is concerned, reports have revealed that the team will continue to operate in Seattle even after Turi's acquisition by Apple.
