AMCU Urges Workers to Move to Pretoria

Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union has asked members to gather in Pretoria for protest. The union has not been able to resolve the issue with the management of platinum mines after several rounds of discussion. AMCU called for strike on January 23 and after more than five weeks, the strike has taken massive toll on the platinum production for first quarter.

AMCU will present a memorandum to the President Jacob Zuma in Pretoria. The ANC government aims to resolve the matter amicably as the country goes for elections in May this year.

More than 40 percent global platinum production has suffered due to strike of more than 70,000 employees in South Africa. The mining companies were having stock for few weeks, which has been exhausted already. The international price of platinum is expected to firm up if the strike in the country continues.

The three major platinum mines in the country have claimed losses over R6 billion due to strike. Anglo American had also filed a lawsuit against AMCU.

Another union under name Workers Association Union (WAU) has formed. The new union has opposed the strike. The union claims to have more than 8,000 members.
