AMCU Continues Protest against Platinum Management

AMCU president Joseph Mathunjwa said that the union will continue to press for demands of the mine workers. He added that AMCU is suffering due to rival National Union of Mineworkers. AMCU is pressing for minimum wage of R12,500 for entry level mineworkers.

Mathunjwa added that AMCU is in favor of peaceful protest. The police is arresting members of the union to put pressure on the workers to end the strike. The government officials have also offered to mediate between the Platinum firms management and AMCU.

There were reports that Lonmin is having platinum reserves and the company will be able to withstand the impact of strike for some more time. Additionally, the platinum prices in international market have firmed up after the production from South Africa reduced. Amplats reported better profit in year 2013.

The workers are demanding higher pay hike. The management is offering 7% increase every year, for next three years. The discussion between the management and union resumed yesterday. Both parities are interested in resolving the matter but are firm in their demands. More than 80,000 workers at three of the largest platinum mines in the world have gone on strike.

Mathunjwa also pointed at the polarization of police in favor of the management. The ANC government would try its best to resolve the strike issue as the general elections are approaching. The management of mines had earlier termed workers’ demands as unrealistic.
