Amazon blocks Disney DVD pre-orders
Online retailer Amazon.com has blocked pre-orders for Walt Disney movies and media reports suggest that the company could be facing another contract dispute in near future. Amazon is already in trouble with some publishers including Hachette Book Group due to contract issues.
Amazon has blocked pre-orders for Walt Disney blockbuster movies including "Captain America: The Winter Soldier", "Maleficent" and some other titles. Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Maleficent are still available on the Amazon online streaming service.
Seattle-based Amazon's spat with French publisher Hachette has escalated in the recent times. In New York Times, a group of named "Authors United" has run an advertisement criticizing Amazon with signatures from 900 authors. Amazon has halted pre-orders for Hachette books. The largest online retailer in the world has been blamed for slow delivery of Hachette books. The data released by Forrester Research suggests that Amazon accounts for 60 percent market share in online book sales.
The company also manages a decent market share in the ebook sales through its popular ebook reader Kindle. Amazon has pressed publishers in the past as well, to reduce the price. The company claims that the ebook sales will skyrocket if the publishers reduce the price. On the ebook pricing issue, Amazon said, "We will never give up our fight for reasonable e-book prices."
DVD sales are counted as an important factor in the revenue from movies. Amazon accounts for major part of DVD sales in the United States. Disney has not yet commented on the blocking of DVD pre-orders by Amazon.
