90% of Lemurs Facing Extinction, reveals Updated IUCN Red List

The updated IUCN Red List containing more than 73,000 species around the world unveiled more than 90% of lemurs are facing extinction. The list is updated twice a year by IUCN panel of experts.

The first updated version of 2014 list also includes temperate slipper orchids and the Japanese eel as critically endangered among others. The list also notified that lemurs are one of the most threatened groups of animals on earth.

Out of the 99 known species of lemurs, 22 are critically endangered and around 48 species are endangered and 20 lemurs were listed as vulnerable to extinction. One of the main reasons for which lemurs are facing threat is destruction of tropical forest habitat in Madagascar.

In the past 20 years, the region has witnessed political instability and poverty level has also increased. Both the factors have led to a rise in the percentage of illegal logging. Experts said 90% of the natural vegetation on the island has been destroyed.

Not many people would be aware of the fact that lemurs are hunted for food as well. Dr. Thomas Lacher, of Texas A&M University, "The high level of threat among lemurs is particularly troubling and calls for significant conservation action. These distinctive primates serve a critical role in the threatened ecosystems of Madagascar".

The red list has also made clear that slipper orchids are threatened with extinction. As much as 79% of slipper orchids found in North America, Europe and temperate parts of Asia are facing extinction threat.

Habitat loss and increased collection of the wild species for trade are considered to be main reasons for it to be included in the red list. Japanese eel, a traditional delicacy and Japan's most expensive food fish, is now listed as endangered.

Overfishing, loss of habitat, barriers to migration, changes to oceanic currents and pollution are main reasons for pushing the fish to verge of extinction.
