Beijing police to combat toxic smog

Beijing authorities have confirmed that police officers have been assigned with the additional responsibility of looking for local sources of air pollution, including dusty roads and open-air barbeques.

Cai Qi, mayor of the city, has also promised to trim down consumption of coal by 30 per cent this year as part of the city efforts to cut air pollution, which has become a big issue in the national capital in the recent past.

Unfavorable weather conditions have played a major role in aggravating the issue of air pollution by preventing pollutants from dispersing.

Wisconsin DNR says climate change ‘debatable’

Earth’s climate has changed throughout the centuries and the reason for the changing climate is a matter of debate, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ altered text from an agency webpage on the Great Lakes.

Wisconsin DNR made the controversial changes to the text on December 21st, striking out previous sentences that had attributed global warming and the resultant climate change to human activities and increasing levels of CO2.

Global ‘environmental goods’ deal collapses

Global ‘environmental goods’ deal collapses

Nearly four dozen countries, including the United States, China and EU members failed to agree on “environmental goods” deal as china submitted impossible late demands at World Trade Organization (WTO) talks.

The two-day meeting of 46 countries at WTO involved a bid to hit a deal on decreasing tariffs on more than 200 environment-friendly goods worth $1 trillion in trade per annum. EU trade commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom called it crucial to show that trade and environment protection can go hand in hand.

Global carbon emissions flattened out in last 3 years: study

Global carbon emissions flattened out in last 3 years: study

Showing a ray of hope that the world is nearing a turning point in the battle against global warming, a new study has suggested that global emissions of heat-trapping carbon dioxide (CO2) have almost flattened out in the last three years.

Glen Peters, a senior researcher at the Oslo-based Center for International Climate & Environmental Research, said that the study suggested that global CO2 emissions from fossil fuels like coal have flattened out in the last three years and will likely is increase just 0.2 per cent this year.

Global wildlife populations on pace to decline by two-thirds by 2020

Jeopardized by human activities, global wildlife populations are on the pace for a decline by two-thirds in just four years, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) said in the 11th edition of its Living Planet Report.

According to the report, global populations of mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians and fish have 58 per cent since 1970; and the populations could decline by 67 per cent by 2020, if the trend persists.

Coral reefs flourish with high fish urine concentration: Study

Scientists have discovered that coral reefs flourish in regions with higher fish urine concentration.Fish pee includes high concentration ofphosphorus, which helps corals. As per recent studies, this along with nitrogen released from their gills holds lot of significance for the survival and growth of coral reefs.

Now, latest research has demonstrated how much crucial the ‘fishy waste’ really is. When scientists analyzed regions with heavy fishing, they discovered that nearly 50%of the main nutrients required to maintain a healthy reef ecosystem were lacking.

Israeli geologist finds oldest oceanic crust

An Israeli geologist has discovered what he describes as the oldest oceanic crust in the world. The ancient crust that lies on bottom of Mediterranean Sea is believed to be 340 million years old. The finding was published in Nature Geoscience.

Roi Granot at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beersheba, studied the pattern of Earth’s magnetic field trapped in submerged rocks. He also measured the patch that resulted from breakdown of the supercontinent Pangaea in the Palaeozoic era.

Evidence pinpointing expected acceleration of sea-level rise due to climate change was hidden behind 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption

Evidence pinpointing expected acceleration of sea-level rise due to climate chan

According to a latest study, appeared in the journal Scientific Reports, the proof pinpointing probable acceleration of sea-level increase because of climate change was hidden behind the consequences of Mount Pinatubo’s eruption in 1991.

The eruption that year released tens of millions of tons of sulphur dioxide into the stratosphere, which probably shielded the impact of industrial pollution on global sea levels over the twenty years since then.
