WHO not considering Haj ban due to MERS

The World Health Organization has informed that it is not considering ban on Saudi Arabia travel for pilgrimage due to higher number of MERS infections reported in the month of April and May. Saudi Arabia has taken strict steps to contain Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus cases.

Official statement from WHO said, “The WHO does not recommend the application of any travel or trade restrictions, including for upcoming pilgrimage travel to Saudi Arabia.”

CDC Confirms First US Case of MERS

CDC has confirmed the first U.S. case of Middle East Respiratory Virus (MERS) in Indiana. A male healthcare worker who traveled from Riyadh to Chicago via London, has been confirmed as first case of MERS coronavirus. He took a bus to travel to Indiana.

The patient traveled on British Airways flight from Riyadh to London and changed flight at Heathrow Airport on April 24. He experienced respiratory symptoms on April 27. On April 28, he went to emergency department at Community Hospital in Munster, Indiana for checked and was admitted.

Saudi Arabia has reported 10 more deaths due to Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) taking the total to 102 in the kingdom. The number of confirmed cases of infection has reached 339. Saudi government has planned more steps to curb the further spread of MERS coronavirus.

Eight out of the ten recent deaths were reported from capital Riyadh. The city with a capital of over 4 million serves high number of visitors and the state health ministry has taken additional measures to educate the locals about risk and symptoms of MERS.
