Necsa or the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation got an award of twenty five million dollars to develop technology for fighting diseases like cancer with the help of low-enriched uranium. The award was given for the successful production of the medical isotope molybdenum-99 (Mo-99) with the use of low enriched uranium (LEU) targets for commercial purpose.

It is clear that the effect of low-enriched uranium has less hazardous effect on human body than the highly enriched metal that is used at present in radiation therapy.
