UN says eating beef is harmful to environment

The United Nations have said that meat eating including beef is harmful to environment and also said that it one of the major reasons for global warmings as it releases dangerous compounds.

Environmental experts have said that meat eating is a key reason for deteriorating global environment as well as global warming. They said that beef is one of the largest source of carbon dioxide released in the atmosphere.

A new report by United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) said that it is very energy intensive to supply meat to the global food supply chain. The UNEP has said that tis estimates have shown that every hamburger of beef is responsible for releasing about 3 kg of carbon components in the atmosphere and this causes global warming.

UNEP also said in its report that the livestock industry releases more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than pollution emitted by vehicles across the world. Data also showed that transport sector contributes about 15 per cent of the total carbon dioxide emission and the livestock industry accounts for about 18.5 per cent of the totalgreenhouse gas emission in the world. The report comes as a surprise to many as it was widely believed that the vehicles are the largest cause of pollution in the world.

“This over consumption of meat is really killing many things (there has to be a campaign) that big meat consumers should stop that. At least try one day without meat,” said Laurence Tubiana, the French Ambassador for the Paris Climate Change Negotiations scheduled to be held in December.
