Three popular VPN providers in China experienced outages in last few days

In an indication that Chinese authorities are apparently making increasing efforts to restrict Internet content which can be accessed by Chinese citizens, three companies which offer services to Internet users in China to view otherwise-censored content have been hit by service disruptions in the last few days.

The three companies which suffered outages over the past few days include Golden Frog, Astrill and StrongVPN. All the three companies offer 'Virtual Private Network' (VPN) services which are being widely used by tech-savvy users in China to evade the censorship imposed by the government on Internet content.

According to reports, the outages of VPN providers Golden Frog, Astrill and StrongVPN largely appeared to have affected students and personal users of Internet in China; with big businesses having seemingly suffered no service disruptions.

About the users impacted by the Golden Frog, Astrill and StrongVPN service outages, ProPublica has revealed in a report that an employee working in the Chinese office of a bigwig US financial firm has confirmed that his company's corporate VPN was not affected by the outages of the three VPN services.

Meanwhile, Reuters has said in a recent report that VPNs are used by "almost all foreign and many domestic companies in China," for conducting business relatively unhindered by disruptions to web services. Reuters has also added alongside that "the services that have seen disruptions recently are widely used by individuals, largely affecting mobile devices."
