SpaceX aims to build refueling station on Mars

Hawthorne-based SpaceX aims to establish a refueling station on Mars first by sending a spacecraft on scouting missions and then sending a spaceship loaded with equipment to build that station, Elon Musk said in a recently held “Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA)” session.

Answering question in the AMA session on the social networking platform on Sunday, Mr. Musk provide details of how his company aims to colonize the Red Planet and turn humans into a multi-planetary species.

Mr. Musk explained that SpaceX would send Dragon scouting missions to ensure how to land without adding a crater on the Red Planet and then to determine the best way to get water for the CH4/O2 Sabatier Reaction. The scouting missions would be followed up by the “Heart of Gold” spaceship with the equipment needed to set up a refueling plant there.

After delivering equipment to Mars, the company would send a manned mission, and the manned crew would be responsible for building the infrastructure on the Red Planet.

The first manned mission to Mars could be launched sometime in 2024, and Mr. Musk’s vision includes sending up to one million people to the red Planet during the next 40 to 100 years.

Less than a month ago, Mr. Musk unveiled his company’s futuristic Interplanetary Transport System (IITS) at the International Astronautical Congress in Mexico, and warned that humans would become an extinct species if they don’t expand their presence beyond Earth.
