Researchers find New Mammal Species That survived Extinction of Dinosaurs

Researchers have found ancient fossil which, they believe, belonged to a new species. According to the researchers, the new species are creatures that survived the event which led to the extinction of dinosaurs.

The newly discovered species has been named ‘Kimbetopsalis simmonsae’. According to the researchers, creatures of the species resembled a beaver and used to eat plants. The Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society has published the discovery.

Dr. Stephen Brusatte, researcher at the University of Edinburgh and lead researcher of the study, said the fossil of Kimbetopsalis simmonsae was discovered by a student of his team, Carissa Raymond. The fossil was found at a site in New Mexico, United States.

While talking to BBC News, Brusatte said he and his team did not take much time to realize that the fossil belonged to a totally new type of mammal. Every member of the team was sure that no-one has seen such kind of fossil before, he added.

The species was named after Kimbeto Wash, the area in the New Mexico badlands where the fossil was found. Psalis, other part of the name, means ‘'cutting shears’, Brusatte said.

According to the study, “This group of now-extinct mammals, collectively known as multituberculates, originated alongside the dinosaurs, during the Jurassic and thrived for more than 100 million years until they were apparently superseded by rodents”.

The mammals were very small during the Jurassic, According to Brusatte.
