With Paris Agreement, world moves closer to tackle climate change

With the landmark Paris Agreement’s adoption and implementation last Friday, the world has moved a step closer to tackle the root cause of global warming and climate change.

Paris Agreement on Climate Change is an international effort, involving 195 countries, to slash man-made emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases that are responsible for the world’s rising temperatures.

The countries that signed the pact agreed to limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius or 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit. They also agreed to do their best to bring emissions further down to below 1.5 degrees Celsius or 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit.

However, many experts say that agreeing on those goals was not as difficult as achieving them will be. Achievement of these ambitious goals will require a transformational shift in the global energy system, which still largely depends on fossil fuels.

Moreover, technological advances in fields like electric vehicles, green energy generation technologies like solar/wind energy farms, are not enough to stop the world’s increasing use of petroleum products and fossil fuels, let alone reverse it.
