Paleontologists discover Dinosaur Species having Gigantic Nose

Paleontologists have found fossils of a dinosaur species that used to live on Earth about 75 million years ago. According to a team of paleontologists, they have discovered the remains of the dinosaur in central Utah.

The team has named the dinosaur as Rhinorex condrupus. Paleontologists said that Rhinorex would have used its giant nose to lure mates. A researcher with NC State and the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, Terry Gates, said that the dinosaur has the largest nose.

Gates said the big nose of Rhinorex is still a mystery for researchers. Gates said, "If this dinosaur is anything like its relatives then it likely did not have a super sense of smell; but maybe the nose was used as a means of attracting mates, recognizing members of its species".

According to the researchers, Rhinorex would have been a plant-eater animal of hadrosaur type, which is also called as duck-billed dinosaur. Hadrosaurs had hard-head crests that they would have used to communicate with other dinosaurs of the group, but some members of the group didn't have crests, researchers added.

Unlike other hadrosaur dinosaurs, Rhinorex has a small spur on the bottom of its nose bone, which looks like a fishing hook with a barb, Gates said. According to her, the main motive of spur is not clear yet. A projection that extends from Rhinorex's face bone gets wider in a different way than it does on other duck-billed dinos, Gates added.

The fossils of the Rhinorex were first found in the 1990s from the Neslen formation in Utah's Book Cliffs. This is the first ever complete hadrosaur from this locale.

According to Gates, paleontologists have the entire skull of the dinosaur, which is wonderful. It has taken about two years to unearth the remains out of the sandstone, she said.
