November brings plethora of stunning celestial events

The month of November is bringing a plethora of opportunities for stargazers to catch some stunning celestial events that have not happened in decades.

After sunset on Nov. 5th, sky gazers will be able to see the Moon and Mars next to each other. The Moon will be on the right side of Mars. On Nov. 6th, the Moon will rise above the red Planet.

On Nov. 11th, the Taurid Meteor Shower will be at its peak. One will be able to feast one’s eyes on the shower by looking toward the southern sky toward the Taurus constellation. There will be an estimated 10 to 15 shooting stars per hour.

Bill Cooke, of NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office, said, “They are very bright, and they are pretty consistent year after year. The best time to look for Taurids is after midnight, when Taurus is high in the sky and when the sky is dark and clear, with no moonlight to mask the fainter meteors.”

Later on Nov. 14th, there will be a Super Moon, which will be the second of three Super Moons of this year. The so-called Super Moon takes place when the full moon makes a closer approach to our planet. It will be largest as well as closest to Earth since 1948.

Lastly, slightly ahead of sunrise on Nov. 25th, the crescent Moon will be seen right below Jupiter, the biggest planet in our solar system. The combination will obviously create a spectacular sight.
