Indian girl wins Community Impact Award at Google Science Fair

LalitaPrasidaSripadaSrisai, who comes from the state of Odisha in eastern India have won the Community Impact Award at the prestigious Google Science Fair competition that was organised in California in the US.

The young scientists presented her project that focused on development of low-cost bio-absorbent based on corn cobs. Lalita, who is a student of DPS Damanjodiin Koraput, developed a project aimed at cleaning waste water by running it through layers of corn cobs, powdered corn cobs, activated charcoal made from corn cobs and fine sand. The project has developed the cost-effective and simple technique that is used in removing contaminants in domestic and industrial waste water as well as in ponds, reservoirs, water tanks and other water bodies.

Lalitasaid, “One day I made a hole at the centre of a cob using a screwdriver. Then I poured some dirty water inside the hole and collected the extract from the other end. Surprisingly, the collected extract was devoid of all the suspended particles. This inspired me to search, examine and experiment whether we could clean wastewater by using corn cobs. This could reduce waste by using another form of waste. Luckily, I was supported by my mentor to plan the project in detail and encouraged to participate in this year’s Google Science Fair.”

The award including 10,000 USD has been sponsored by Scientific American. She will also receive support for one year by the organisation to build on her project. The event was hosted by Dereck Muller and the winner was announced from Google Headquarters in Mountain View, California.
